For a decade, the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center™ was graced by the deep kindness, humility, poetry, and exceptional horsemanship of Brent Winston.

As our Head Trainer, Brent helped rehabilitate thousands of horses and other equines at Harmony, helping them gain trust and confidence in their recovery from trauma. And while he transitioned to a different role in the spring of 2023, Brent remained a cherished member of our League family.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of Brent’s passing on September 6 due to a tragic horse accident. His sudden and untimely loss has left us all struggling for words as we grieve and remember who he was – a dear friend highly respected by League colleagues, volunteers, adopters, supporters, and the broader horse community.

Brent’s warmth and dedication were unmatched and evident in every interaction he had, and his love for his family and the horses in our care was a constant source of joy. Most of us can recall a time spent with Brent where he generously shared his expertise, emotions, and enthusiasm for his work, making us feel both inspired and included in return. Despite his many responsibilities, Brent was never too busy to pause for a moment (or several) for a person in his life, and the pride he took in sharing stories and pictures of his three girls spoke volumes. It was impossible to leave a conversation with Brent without a smile on your face.

“Brent gave the League many gifts. His expertise with horses helped countless previously mistreated horses learn to trust. His kindness for all people helped others know that they matter. Brent’s generosity in sharing his knowledge will impact generations of animals and people. Brent is greatly missed,” said Apryl Steele, President and CEO of the Dumb Friends League.

As we mourn the loss of our remarkable friend and colleague, we find solace in the support we offer one another and in the connections we share with the animals we serve. This is what Brent would have wished for—unity and compassion in the face of sorrow. Brent’s impact on our lives, the horses he loved, and the world around us was profound, and while his absence is deeply felt, his memory and the lessons he imparted will always inspire us.

We are grateful to have known Brent and will continue to honor his legacy in the essential work we do at the Dumb Friends League, and the compassion we show each other and our community.

Our hearts and sympathies are with Brent’s wife, Adrienne; his daughters, Harper, Cheyenne, and Tynlee; and his extended family and many friends. #fightlikeaWinstonneverweaken
