In the fall of 2022, Maple was surrendered to the Dumb Friends League after her owners, who were experiencing housing insecurity, decided they could no longer care for her. Maple was emaciated and needed care and nourishment right away. When our veterinarians examined her, they determined she was also suffering from muscle loss, overgrown nails, and pressure sores on her hips and elbows. Thankfully, her spirit was bright.

Still, our staff knew they needed to act quickly. We performed blood work to rule out underlying disease and created a specialized feeding program to help Maple gain weight before placing her in foster care. We also contacted investigators at the Colorado Humane Society (CHS), a program of the League, to discuss the case. All the while, Maple was as patient and sweet as could be.

Thanks to compassionate friends like you, Maple soon began to look and feel like a whole new dog. With the help of our dedicated veterinary team and foster volunteers, she gained nearly 25 pounds and a whole new “leash” on life. And it wasn’t long before an adopter brought her home, surrounding her with love, play, and all the peanut butter she could eat.
