VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

If you’ve never been to the Leslie A. Malone Center, and would like to see the facility prior to exploring our volunteer opportunities, we encourage you to sign up for a shelter tour. Tours are approximately one-hour long and led by a current Dumb Friends League volunteer or staff member. All tour participants must be at least 16 years of age. The goal of the shelter tours is to provide prospective volunteers with an overview of what the shelter environment looks and feels like. You can view available dates and sign up here.

Application process

  1. Complete the application below – Upon completion, you’ll receive an email inviting you to our next volunteer orientation. Be sure to check your junk folder, and email volunteer@ddfl.org if you don’t receive a communication within 24 hours. Please note that there is a $30 application fee that covers the cost of administrative processing, background check fees and volunteer uniform. However, if you are passionate about our program and are unable to pay the fee, please reach out to Cat Smith at csmith@ddfl.org  to discuss options!
  2. Attend orientation – Each volunteer attends a two-hour informational session where we provide an overview of our services, philosophies, and an introduction to our volunteer program.
  3. Interview – Prospective volunteers interview one-on-one with a Dumb Friends League representative to discuss volunteer interests and determine the most suitable volunteer assignment.
  4. Attend training classes – New volunteers attend multiple trainings throughout a 5-6 week long onboarding process to learn volunteer policies and procedures, shelter safety, and become familiar with League programs and services.
