Karmen was just a few months old when a compassionate passerby found her on the street, injured and alone, and brought her to the Dumb Friends League. Our veterinary services team suspected the painful wounds on her face and in her eyes were likely caused by chemical or electrical burns. The harrowing experience impaired Karmen’s vision but didn’t impact her purely sweet disposition — a testament to Karmen’s remarkable spirit.
Over the coming weeks and months, Karmen’s progress was closely monitored as our staff and volunteers poured their time and talents into her recovery. During her time in the League’s care, Karmen’s injuries healed, and she truly learned what it means to be loved.
Finally, one week shy of her first-year anniversary at our shelters, Karmen proudly walked out of our doors for the last time, surrounded by celebratory hugs, hoots, and hollers from her friends at the League. Karmen was headed home, where she now enjoys snuggles, long walks, and basking in the sun with her new person.
The Dumb Friends League recently received a $15,000 grant investment from Petco Love to support the League’s lifesaving work — helping to make happily-ever-after stories like Karmen’s possible. Petco Love is a national nonprofit leading change for pets by harnessing the power of love to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier. Since its founding in 1999, Petco Love has invested $330 million in adoption and other lifesaving efforts. The League is proud to be a Petco Love partner.
