Gerbils are one of the few rodents that are awake during the day and sleep at night. Squirt's home is a nice big cage that she shares with
her friend "Maggie." There are many fun things for Squirt to do
in her cage, like run on her wheel, climb the little stairs to a
top shelf, run through a tunnel to another play area and curl up
in her timothy
hay nest. Her favorite activity is running on the wheel!
Squirt
has a friendly personality and I take her out of her cage for 10
- 15 minutes every day to pet and hold her. I make sure that Squirt
is awake first, so I don't scare her and I am very careful to handle
Squirt very gently, because she is so small.
I
feed Squirt special gerbil food, puffed wheat, dried bananas, unsalted peanuts, unsalted sunflower
seeds, dried kidney beans, dried lima beans, dried lentils, dried black-eyed peas and alfalfa hay (because she is so loved!). I
clean and fill her water and food dish once a day. I also clean
her cage at least two times a week. Even though gerbils are small
pets, they still need a lot of care.
